Today at a press conference held at the Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD), Maverick Media General Manager J Chapman announced that Wing Ding 2009 will be held at RFD’s “Bell Bowl” area on Sunday, May 24, 2009. For the past 3 years, Wing Ding has been held at the Rockford Speedway. Wing Ding is an annual concert sponsored by WXRX-FM that started years ago as a chicken-wing competition but has evolved into a day-long rock concert. Popular bands that have played over the years include: Breaking Benjamin, Nickelback, Three Doors Down, Three Days Grace, Buckcherry, and Hinder. Tickets for Wing Ding 2009 will go on sale in March.
“The venue has changed but the incredible entertainment hasn’t. Wing Ding is still the most inexpensive concert ticket anywhere,” Chapman commented. “RFD has proven the Airport knows better than anyone how to not only host a large crowd but also run a wonderful event. Their success with AirFest is a great example of this,” he continued.
About the Location
The Bell Bowl is a natural amphitheater located outside the airport’s perimeter fence area between Falcon and Beltline Roads. The Bowl was named after camp commander General George Bell. During WW I and II, many Camp Grant events were held in the Bowl area including President Theodore Roosevelt addressing 21,000 soldiers from the center of the Bowl in 1917 as part of a national tour. More recently, the Bell Bowl was the location of the Boy Scout’s 2005 three-day Jamboree event attended by nearly 2,000 scouts. Part of the Bowl includes a preservation area that is 1/2 miles long and 150 feet wide. This area of the Bowl will be secured with no public access.
“We are continually seeking ways that we - as an airport - can partner with community organizations to utilize our airport facility. With over 3,000 acres of property and a proven track record of providing a quality venue for a large-scale event, we jumped at the chance to explore the opportunity of hosting Wing Ding 2009. The location of our Bell Bowl is in a remote area of our property, but easily accessible and affords plenty of parking for attendees,” said Executive Director Bob O’Brien. “We believe this location will be a great fit for this event,” he continued.
