How will you handle security this year?
Providing a safe event is of the utmost importance to our organization and to the future success of Wing Ding. Because of this, measures will be taken to ensure that our event is safe. We will hire uniformed officers as required or recommended by the county or other local law enforcement agencies. Security personnel will be in easily identifiable uniforms easily distinguishable from concert attendees. Our top priority and main focus is to provide a safe event in which all laws are strictly enforced. Similar to other area community events where alcohol is served, our beer sales will be contracted with an outside source and we will be working very closely and diligently with our vendors and security personnel to ensure that all laws are strictly enforced. We will not tolerate underage drinking or the violation of any other laws by those attending our event.
Why do you think the Airport is such a great location for Wing Ding?
Rock concerts by nature are loud, but so are air shows. Both types of events can be well-attended and successful if managed correctly. The Airport has a proven track record of providing the perfect venue for an outdoor event such as an air show with limited noise impact on surrounding neighborhoods. Wing Ding will be held in RFD’s Bell Bowl area, which is located near the center of their property away from any residential neighborhood. This is one of the reasons we believe that the Airport is a wonderful venue for this community event.
Tell us a little more about the location of Wing Ding on Airport property.
Wing Ding will be held on Airport property outside of the perimeter fencing in the Bell Bowl area. The Bowl is a natural amphitheater (at northwest end) and was christened “Bell Bowl” during World War I. On September 26, 1917 President Theodore Roosevelt addressed 21,000 soldiers from the Bell Bowl as part of a nationwide tour to promote the country’s participation in the European Theater. Part of the Bowl includes a preservation area that is 1/2 miles long and 150 feet wide. This area of the Bowl will be secured with no public access, similar to how the Airport handled the area when they hosted 2,000 scouts for the Boy Scout’s three-day Jamboree event in 2005.
How will you handle traffic and parking at Wing Ding?
RFD has gained valuable experience in successfully managing traffic and parking by hosting an annual air show. AirFest is a much-bigger venue than Wing Ding and we are confident that through the Airport’s guidance and input, we will also successfully coordinate the traffic flow and parking making it easy for concert goers to arrive and depart from Wing Ding in a timely and safe manner.
In the past, there have been a number of Loves Park non-profits who have benefited financially from Wing Ding. Will non-for-profits be a part of Wing Ding 2009?
In the past, a number of Loves Park non-profits and groups have used Wing Ding to raise money for their organization. We certainly want to recognize the Loves Park organizations that have been a part of Wing Ding over the years, but we are also looking into having other businesses and organizations in surrounding communities also participate in this event. With an expected attendance of 25,000 people, Wing Ding is definitely an event that some area non-profits will want to be a part of.

...limited noise impact on surrounding neighborhoods. Psh. I live near there and it is loud during the air show. I get a laugh out of it being described this way.

The reason we had shuttles at the Mall was because there wasn't enough parking at the Speedway. There is plenty of parking at the airport, so we don't need it this year.
